Can you run Alex Caves Mod on Fabric?
Alex's Caves was released by its developers for Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1. There is no official Fabric version, so Fabric players have to choose between switching loaders and relying on an unofficial port.
Why the loader matters
Forge and Fabric are two different ways of loading mods into Minecraft Java Edition. Each provides its own hooks and libraries, and a mod is compiled against one of them. A Forge jar placed in a Fabric instance is simply ignored or causes an error; it will not quietly work.
Alex's Caves also depends on Citadel, a shared library used by the developer's mods, which is itself built for Forge in the official release line.
Official status
| Loader | Official Alex's Caves build |
|---|---|
| Forge 1.20.1 | Yes. This is the release target. |
| Fabric | No official build from the developers. |
| Quilt | No official build. |
Some download listings for the official files also tag NeoForge on 1.20.1, since NeoForge began as a fork of Forge for that version. Treat that as a convenience, and check the file page for your exact setup.
Unofficial ports
Because the mod's source code is public, community developers have published ports. As of September 2026, at least one independent continuation project advertises builds for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge across newer Minecraft versions. These projects are made by other people, are not affiliated with the original team, and may need their own library mods in place of Citadel.
If you try one, read its own page carefully, install exactly the dependencies it lists, and report problems to that project rather than to the original developers.
What about compatibility layers?
Some players experiment with tools that try to load Forge mods inside Fabric. Alex's Caves is large and touches world generation, rendering and entity behaviour, which are exactly the areas where such layers tend to struggle. We don't recommend relying on one for a world you care about.
Choosing a path
- You want the mod exactly as its developers released it: use a separate Forge 1.20.1 instance. Most launchers let you keep Fabric and Forge instances side by side. Follow the installation guide.
- You're committed to a Fabric modpack: an unofficial port may be the only route. Test it in a copy of your world first.
- You're on a newer Minecraft version: the 1.21.1 explainer covers the version side of the same question.
